In 2001, a ground-breaking study by the National Eye Institute (part of the United States Government's National Institutes of Health) concluded that nutritional supplements could slow macular degeneration. According to newspaper columnist, medical expert, Dr. Donahue: "A combination of vitamins and minerals slows the progression of moderate dry macular degeneration to the advanced stage." Dr. Donahue explains that the specific combination of vitamins and minerals needed to achieve this effect are: vitamins A, C, E, Zinc, and Lutein.
