What are LEA Symbols® and why are they used?

LEA Puzzle

Designed for training and assessing typically developing toddlers and other young children, the puzzle also serves as an assessment tool for individuals with brain damage, or for older children and adults with low cognitive abilities.

The American Optometric Association recommends that children have a comprehensive vision exam at 6 months of age, 3 years and around kindergarten. Traditional eye exams require the subject to identify letters and numbers, however at these young ages it is not always possible for children to do so. Children often get anxious and confused when they are pressured to respond without knowing the correct answer. LEA Symbols® were invented to solve this problem.

The  LEA Symbols® are comprised of simple shapes that children are familiar with: circle, square, house, apple, so children are less likely to guess incorrectly using these charts.  As a result, they provide a more consistent and reliable way to measure children’s visual acuity.
LEA Symbols® charts come complete with symbol flash cards and a response key to ensure the child is comfortable with the symbols being used before vision testing even begins. Amcon offers a complete line of children’s vision testing products.
