Valentines Edition: Loving Your Eyes

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, it seems appropriate to dedicate this week’s blog post to the love you should be giving to your eyes. Think about it… without healthy eyes, how would you see your Valentine?

Your Valentine, you eyes.

Your Valentine, you eyes.

Here are a few tips to keep your eyes in good shape.

Do Not Read Closely
When reading a book it is best to hold the book as far away from your face as you can, usually around 15″ to 20″ away.
Take Breaks
Doing any kind of near sighted reading for long periods of times will dry out your eyes. Take short breaks, if you wear glasses take them off, just to relax and soothe your eyes.
Computers And Eye Strain
As sad as it may be, your computer is a cause for eye strain. Typically you need to be at least 20″ away from your computers monitor.  After about 30 minutes of looking at your computer straight, you need to take a break.
Sleep Early
Myopia is more prone to manifest itself at night.  Sleeping through the night and sleeping with lights off help the eye recharge overnight.
Avoid direct UVA and UVB rays
Wear sunglasses with proven UVA protection.
Keep the Lights on.
While watching a movie in the dark may be fun, it is harder for your eyes to work and the darkness will cause you to strain your eyes even more. If you are reading in the dark, many people have the tendancy to hold what they are reading too close to their face.
And last but not least… Regular vision exams
It may sound redundant, but eye exams are important.  If you eyes have not been checked in a while it could be putting additional strain on your eyes.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all.
