The Perils of Eye Makeup

A while back, I posted an entry about eye injuries.  My (retired) ophthalmologist father-in-law (Dr. Tom) talked about recurrent corneal erosion caused by a mascara brush touching the eye.  This caused me to wonder about other hazards of eye makeup.   So, here goes, five DANGERS of eye makeup.

1) LEAD POISONING: Kohl eyeliner (which is no longer sold in the United States due to FDA regulations) contains lead and has been shown to cause elevated lead levels in infants when mothers wore kohl eyeliner during pregnancy.

2) HERPES, PINKEYE or STAPH INFECTION.  Eye makeup can get contaminated from a person who has these conditions.  Sharing someone’s eye makeup can cause you to get infected.

3) CANCER. Some eyeshadows contain iron oxide which is a suspected carcinogen.

4) EYE INFECTIONS.  All cosmetics contain some type of preservative.  This potency of the preservative wears off over time. Therefore, older eye makeup can become contaminated with bacteria which can infect the eyes.

5) ALLERGIC REACTIONS – Eye cosmetics have been known to cause allergic reactions, so much so that several companies market hypoallergenic varieties.  Another lesser known allergy causing product is the adhesive used to adhere false eyelashes.

So there you have it: the scary dangers of eye makeup.   Don’t sacrifice your the health of your eyes for your makeup!
