What are the benefits of Ocular-Vitamins?

Amcon recently added ocular vitamins to our product line.  My first question was what benefit do these offer?   According to the description of our new Ocular-Vitamins, these supplements “may help slow the progression of age related macular degeneration.”  But is this really possible?

According to the Mayo Clinic web site, dry macular degeneration (the most common form) “is a chronic eye disease that causes vision loss in the center of your field of vision. ”

In 2001, a ground-breaking study by the National Eye Institute (part of the United States Government’s National Institutes of Health) concluded that nutritional supplements could slow macular degeneration.  According to newspaper columnist, medical expert, Dr.  Donahue: “A combination of vitamins and minerals slows the progression of moderate dry macular degeneration to the advanced stage.”  Dr. Donahue explains that the specific combination of vitamins and minerals needed to achieve this effect are: vitamins A, C, E, Zinc, and Lutein.

Amcon’s new Ocular-Vitamins contain all these vitamins and minerals.  But as with any nutritional supplements, patients should consult their physician before taking any supplements.
