How do you know if your punctal plugs have fallen out?

Last week I talked about our new line of punctal plugs (the Comfortear plugs) which are designed to minimize pop out. When I first heard about them, my first questions was: “punctal plugs pop out?” Apparently they do.

So how do you know if you lost a punctal plug?

1) You can’t see them anymore. A lot of people can actually see their punctal plugs. If you can’t see them anymore – this might be a clue that your punctal plugs are gone.

2) Your eyes are getting dry again. Punctal plugs are designed to alleviate symptoms of dry eye. If your dry eye symptoms are back then maybe you have lost your punctal plugs.

One of the reasons why punctal plugs fall out is due to vigorous rubbing of eyes when removing makeup or inadvertent probing of the area around the eye when applying makeup.

The placement of the punctal plug can also affect its ability to stay put. If the punctal plug is placed in the upper punctum where the lid is moving, the plug will be more likely to fall out and irritate the wearer.
