Five conditions that are not eye related can be detected by the appearance of your eyes

Can't shut your eyes? your body may be fighting off an infection.

Can’t shut your eyes? your body may be fighting off an infection.

Working in the optical industry, you become very familiar with many of the common eye-related diseases that might be diagnosed by an eye doctor. But, something I didn’t know is that several other non-optical related diseases and conditions can be detected from the appearance of your eyes. Here are five of the most surprising disease diagnosis that might be made by the appearance of your eyes.

1) Bacterial or viral infections can be detected by the inability to close eyes or control tears. An infection sometimes triggers a condition called Bell’s palsy (temporary paralysis in half the face due to damage to the nerve that controls facial muscles).  If you are having this problem, it may be a clue that your body is fighting an infection.

2) A stroke – can be detected by double vision, limited vision or complete loss of vision.

3) Hyperthyroidism – can be detected by the appearance of protruding eyes.

4) Hepatitis and Cirrhosis – can be detected by whites of the eyes appearing yellow.

5) Thyroid disease—either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism – can be detected by disappearing eyebrows.

So if you have been putting off a visit to your eye doctor – maybe you should think again. Your eye doctor is not just checking your eyes – his examination could save your life.
